Introduction

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology at OHSU includes an eleven-member faculty headed by Dr. Mark Reller, two nurse practitioners, four fellows, and numerous nurses, technicians and administrative staff. Expertise in all of the sub-specialties within Pediatric Cardiology is represented in our faculty. We provide comprehensive care to patients with all forms of congenital or acquired heart disease referred to our center from hospitals and physicians throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Our Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgical Program is directed by Dr. Ross Ungerleider, assisted by Dr. Karl Welke and Richard Reed, PA. Our team performs all state-of-the-art pediatric cardiac surgical procedures with the exception of heart transplantation.

Our pediatric ICU, in-patient wards, operating rooms, echocardiography lab and out-patient clinic are housed in Doernbecher Children's Hospital, a free-standing academic Children's Hospital which provides the widest range of health care services for children in the region. Doernbecher is connected via bridge to OHSU Hospital where the emergency department, Neonatal ICU, Catheterization Lab, MRI suite and Adult services are located.

Clinical Overview

Our echocardiography lab is staffed by six faculty and seven technicians, under the direction of Dr. Mary Minette. The lab performs approximately 4600 transthoracic, 220 transesophageal and 290 fetal echos per year. We are also increasingly utilizing the techniques of intravascular sonography and 3-dimensional cardiac reconstruction. Dr. David Sahn enjoys an international reputation in the application of the most technically advanced echocardiography equipment available.

Dr. Grant Burch directs our cardiac catheterization laboratory which performs over 300 (mostly interventional) catheterizations per year. Drs. Burch and Armsby provide expertise at the cutting-edge of post-natal interventional catheterization.

We also have a busy electrophysiology program that includes state-of-the-art invasive procedures utilizing radiofrequency ablation and intracardiac mapping techniques for complex dysrhythmias. Dr. Seshadri Balaji directs our pediatric electrophysiology program.

Drs. Michael Silberbach, Craig Broberg and Michael Jerosch-Herold provide the division with expertise in Cardiac MRI. Dr. Jerosch-Herold is a world-renown leader in MRI technology working closely with faculty and fellows to extend the clinical applications of this imaging modality.

Fellow exposure to out-patient pediatric cardiology is provided through numerous clinic settings including Fellows Continuity Clinic, Adult Congenital, Electrophysiology, Pediatric Dyslipidemia Clinic as well as a very busy, well-developed Pediatric Cardiology Outreach Clinic program operating throughout Oregon.

For more information about specific areas of our clinical services please see our link to the Sample Rotation Schedule.

Research

Research is a valued and exciting facet of the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program. Fellows are provided concentrated, protected time to pursue mentored basic science or clinical research projects during their training. The OHSU community provides an extraordinarily rich and enthusiastic environment for both intra-divisional projects as well as interdisciplinary collaborations. Within cardiology, investigators are at the cutting edge of technology in Echocardiography, Cardiac MRI, Clinical Outcomes Research, Neuroprotective surgical techniques, Heart Failure, Transcatheter Interventions and Electrophysiology.

Another important resource is the newly established University Heart Research Center under the direction of Dr. Kent Thornburg. The expressed purpose of this Center is to attract a multi-disciplinary and "world class" research team to foster expanding research opportunities in the study of the mechanisms and expressions of congenital heart disease.

Fellowship Program

The objective of our Fellowship Training Program is to provide a comprehensive, solid foundation of knowledge and experience to academically oriented trainees. Fellows are trained in all aspects of pediatric cardiology and work at a pace which is appropriately challenging, while still able to facilitate the educational opportunity in each experience. Our program produces exceptionally trained graduates with the skills and opportunities to become leaders in any aspect of the field.

The Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program is a three-year ACGME-accredited training program. We offer fourth year sub-specialty fellowships in echocardiography, interventional catheterization and adult congenital heart disease on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me, or Jodi Leonard, our Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Coordinator, at 503-494-2194 or by e-mail.
