  • Sakai offers a wide array of web-based teaching and collaboration tools to OHSU faculty and students. These tutorials provide step-by-step instructions to support you in developing proficiency using the most popular tools.

    Sakai Basics    [return to top]

Before you begin using Sakai, review these technical tips for a basic explanation of Sakai's layout, best practices and information about setting up your first course site.

    Common Operations    [return to top]

Although every site and tool in Sakai serves a different purpose and allows you to perform different activities, some operations that you perform are the same in all sites and in most or all tools, especially the Resources tool.

    My Workspace   [return to top]

My Workspace is a private workspace for each user. When you log in, My Workspacedisplays the Message of the Day (information from the system administrator) and the "synoptic" calendar, a collection of all calendar entries from each course or project site's calendar.

    Announcements    [return to top]

The Announcements tool is an online bulletin board, allowing instructors to post upcoming events and due dates on a site's homepage.

    Calendar    [return to top]

The Calendar tool allows instructors and site organizers to post information about a site’s activities in calendar format. Many instructors also use the tool to post readings for each class on the day they are due. Research, group, and department projects often use Calendar to post group deadlines.

News (RSS Feeds)  [return to top]

The News tool allows you to view information from a news source, blog, events listing, or other site that updates its content frequently.

    Mailtool  [return to top]

The Mailtool allows you to send email messages to any students, groups, or instructors in your course.

    Forums    [return to top]

If you are an instructor or site organizer, the Forums tool allows you to create any number of online discussion forums for your course or project sites. As a student or project participant, the Forums tool is a place to post content and engage in asynchronous dialog with other site members.

    Lessons   [return to top]

The Lessons feature allows a user to prepare sequential presentations and lectures.. The following Technical Tips describe the uses of the Lessons tool, how to set up lesson modules and sections, and advanced applications of this tool.

    Assignments   [return to top]

The Assignment tool enables an instructor to post, grade, and return assignments to students. It also allows students to submit their completed assignments. Assignments are private -- student submissions are visible to instructors but not to other participants of a course site..

Tests and Quizzes   [return to top]

The Tests and Quizzes tool is where students can take graded and ungraded exams.

    Gradebook   [return to top]

The Gradebook feature allows a user to view grades for a course. You can only see grades your instructor has chosen to display. These grades may include the cumulative score for a course, the course grade, and/or the grade for each assignment in the course.

    Syllabus    [return to top]

The Syllabus tool allows you to create a course syllabus with Sakai's text editor or you can also redirect this space to a pre-existing PDF or HTML page.
