Information Line: (503) 494-5191 The old Doernbecher, established in 1926, was Oregon's first children's hospital. The new Doernbecher, completed in July 1998, spans a canyon and measures 250,000 square feet. Modern Healthcare and the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health awarded Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership top national honors for its Doernbecher design. The building bridges the campus and brings together the full range of medical technology and children's specialists in collaboration under one long roof. Inpatient services on the 8th, 9th and 10th floors include care for children from birth through adolescence with 43 newborn intensive care beds, 48 general acute pediatric beds, 20 pediatric intensive care beds, and 21 cancer center beds, 16 pediatric intermediate care beds, in addition to dedicated pediatric operating rooms, radiology and diagnostic support, infusion and day hospital units, school rooms, and a host of support services for patients and their families. Outpatient services are located together on the 7th floor and include primary and adolescent care, the radiology department and the pharmacy, as well as the Child Development and Rehabilitation Clinic, and the medical/surgical specialty, dental and child and adolescent psychiatry clinics. Art abounds throughout Doernbecher, thanks to generous grants and donations. Colorful, tropical bird mobiles hover from the ceiling over the lobby, and fanciful animal sculptures ring the room. On every floor and in every room, there is some hands-on creation to delight, entertain, and distract young patients from discomfort and anxiety.
Here are some snapshots taken on a recent walk
around the building.
