Gale S. Rankin, RN, DIPN '47

January 17, 1919 - July 22, 2012 Age 93

Gale Storm Rankin passed away peacefully in her home where she had graciously welcomed, encouraged and entertained her many friends. Always known for her optimism, kindness and hospitality, she was a woman of great faith, a role model, mentor and an accomplished career woman. Her life at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, where she attended daily mass and served as sacristan, was the focal point of her life. Gale's life gave witness to the basic tenets of Christian principles; love one another, forgive others, have a generous spirit and be happy. Born in Klipson Beach, Wash., she earned her B.S. in nursing in 1948, and began a 33-year nursing career at Multnomah Hospital as a staff nurse where she advanced to Director of Nursing. When the hospital merged with University Hospital she was appointed Director of Nursing, including North and South Hospitals and Doernbecher Memorial Hospital for Children. Gale received many awards over the years, including "Boss of the Year" by the American Business Women's Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Manuel Boyes; and is survived by her nephew, Bradford Merrill; and niece, Cathy Haag. Gale enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, sailing, fishing and spending time with her much-loved dogs. She was an excellent cook and a gracious hostess who faithfully made preparations each week for breakfast following Wednesday morning mass. Gale loved a good joke, she was the life of every party and her margaritas were legendary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 4112 SW 6th Avenue Drive, Portland, where she was an active member since the parish was established in 1953. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities or DoveLewis.
