Special focus on male reproduction

Education

  • A.B., Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - Dartmouth College, 1999
  • M.Sc., Epidemiology, Stanford School of Medicine, 2000
  • Ph.D., Human Genetics, The University of Chicago, 2007
  • Postdoctoral fellow, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge, UK, 2007-2010

Biography

Don Conrad, Ph.D. is the chief of the Division of Genetics at the Primate Center. He is a broadly trained human geneticist with over 15 years of experience in developing statistical and experimental methods for genome analysis. He obtained a Ph.D. in Human Genetics from the University of Chicago and then did his post-doctoral training at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK. Before joining OHSU, Dr. Conrad was faculty at Washington University in St. Louis where he ran his own research group in the Department of Genetics.

A major emphasis of his current research includes defining the origins of mutation and the distribution of mutation frequencies that impact gametogenesis, fertilization, and pregnancy. He has a specific interest in testis biology and has done work on a) developing methods for multiplex in vivo functional characterization of genes in testicular germ cells using shRNA and CRISPR b) purifying testicular cell populations c) mapping functional elements of germ cells genomes d) characterizing testis pathology using single cell RNA sequencing e) investigating the role of the immune system in regulation of spermatogenesis.

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) in Human Genetics, GNDU, Amritsar, India, 2002
  • M.Sc. (Hons.) in Human Genetics, GNDU, Amritsar, India, 2004
  • Ph.D. in Regulatory Biology from Cleveland State University & Cleveland Clinic, USA, 2014
  • Postdoctoral Fellow, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD, USA, 2015-2022

Biography

Jasvinder Ahuja, Ph.D. is a research assistant professor at the Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy, OHSU. He is a molecular geneticist investigating the biochemistry of DNA double strand break (DSB) repair. His career goal is to identify and functionally characterize every DSB repair gene/transcript in the human genome. This is critical for understanding the basis of genome integrity maintenance during cell proliferation (growth, differentiation and cancer), species propagation (fertility), and regulation of senescence (ageing).

Jasvinder obtained his Ph.D. in Regulatory Biology from a joint program offered by Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Clinic, where he discovered that the proteasome is recruited to meiotic chromosomes and is required for pairing of homologous chromosomes and repair of programmed DSBs by homologous recombination (Ahuja et al., Science, 2017). His research as post-doctoral fellow at National Cancer Institute challenged many aspects of the textbook model for homologous recombination during meiosis and resulted in proposal of a new model which is compatible with current data– the disassembly, migration, annealing model for meiotic recombination (Ahuja, et al. Molecular Cell, 2021).
