Hearing Conservation

Protect and love your ears!  Exposing your ears to continuous high levels of sound can permanently damage them in the form of a hearing loss, tinnitus, and even distorted speech.  It does not matter if that sound is a pleasant sound or something unpleasant.  If it is too loud, it is too loud.

Sound is measured in decibels.  According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 85 decibels (dBA) is safe for up to 8 hours over a 24 hour period.  For every 3 decibels above the 85 dBA, you have to cut your safe listening time in half. 85 dBA is about the sound level of a busy street corner.

Sound level meter

A sound level meter is a device that can measure the volume of the room.  There are several sound level meter apps available to download to your phone, so you can check if an environment is a safe listening level.  We recommend the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app.
