Electrolysis Hair Removal
Electrolysis is an FDA-approved permanent solution for removing unwanted facial and body hair regardless of hair color, skin color or hair texture. The procedure involves sliding a thin, sterile probe into the hair follicle and applying a small amount of electrical current. The objective is to destroy the areas of the follicle that provide the nutriments for hair growth. Once the target areas are destroyed, the hair releases and tweezers are used to remove it. Electrolysis can be performed on most areas of the face and body including eyebrows, chin, upper lip, breast, jawline, underarms, feet, abdomen, bikini line, legs, back, shoulders and genital regions. Treatment plans vary greatly from person to person and depend on a number of factors including the amount of hair, the size of the area being treated, sensitivity level and the hair growth cycle. Because of these variables, multiple treatments are necessary.
Common reasons for Electrolysis include:
- Surgical site prep
- Unwanted hair growth due to hormonal changes or changes in medications
There are three methods of Electrolysis:

Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses an intense beam of light to remove unwanted hair in nearly any area, although the most common treatment areas are the chest, back, legs, armpits, upper lip, chin and bikini line. Hair color and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal.
Lasers that remove hair are continuing to evolve. We offer the newest LightSheer® DUET™ Laser, which is FDA approved for permanent hair reduction. Although people who have darker hair with light skin color are the best candidates, the new technology offered by the LightSheer® DUET™ can successfully treat darker skin types, as well. In addition, the treatment time is remarkably fast and patients report significantly reduced discomfort with the new laser. The Sciton® JOULE™, a versatile laser with a broad range of applications, is also available for laser hair removal.
Results of laser hair removal vary greatly from person to person. Laser hair removal provides a prolonged period of hair reduction, but hair regrowth is still possible. For best results, you may need four to six treatments spaced a number of weeks apart. Additional periodic maintenance treatments — perhaps once every six to 12 months — may be needed as well.
Laser hair removal generally takes about five treatments. Waxing services are also available through OHSU aestheticians.
