Lois Laing, B.S. '59

SoN Alumni Lois Ann Laing, 100 died on August 9, 2013 in Richland WA. She will be greatly missed and always remembered by those who knew and loved her.

 

She was born July 5, 1913, the only child of Paul F. and Hattie C. (Halverson) Walters in Yankton, South Dakota. She grew up on their homestead outside Phillip, S.D. riding horseback to/from a one-room school house eleven miles each day. During high school years she boarded with a family in Phillip during the week and returned to the ranch on weekends. She attended nursing school in Sioux City, Iowa. After graduation, she moved to California and worked in a hospital, where she met her future husband.

She married Charles A. Laing in 1937. They resided in California and South Dakota until 1941 when they moved with their two sons to Pendleton, Oregon. In the mid 50’s Lois’ parents followed her to Pendleton and remained living there. Lois was a resident of Pendleton until 2011, when she moved to Richland WA.to be closer to her son Pat. Lois worked many years as a registered nurse. After furthering her education, she was employed by the State of Oregon in an executive nursing position until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Dorcas Church Circle, Pendleton Woman’s Club, Pendleton Country Club, Elks, Red Hat Society and past Matron of Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing bridge, scrapbooking, sewing, gardening, golfing and stamp collecting.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents and husband Charles. She is survived by sons Chris (Linda) Laing, Tehachapi, CA. and Pat (Ronnie) Laing, Kennewick, WA. Granddaughters, Janis (Dan) Steffens, Troy, ID. Leslie Laing, Vail, AZ. And Eve (Carlos) Williams, Los Angeles, CA. Grandson Jason Laing, Hermosa Beach, CA. Great granddaughter Anna Steffens, Troy, ID.
