Research Interests: Dr. McCarty's research is focused on understanding the interplay between cell biology and fluid mechanics in the cardiovascular system. In particular, his research into the balance between hydrodynamic shear forces and chemical adhesive interactions has great relevance to underlying processes of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation.
Rotation project: Rho GTPases in blood cell biology.
The Rho family of GTP binding proteins – also commonly referred to as the Rho GTPases – are master regulators of the cytoskeleton. Our goal is to define the role of Rho GTPase signaling in blood platelet and leukocyte cytoskeletal reorganization and function.
