Instructor: Bart Johnson, DDS, MS

Lecture: 5/31    Time: 9:00 am-6:00pm

Lecture: 6/1     Time: 8:00am-5:00pm

Tuition: $500/dentist    $400/staff

Medicine is becoming an exponentially more complex practice, and our dental patients are presenting with ever-increasingly complex histories.  In order to make the best dental decisions with our patients, we need to understand the intimate details of their overall status. This will be both a lecture and participation course.  We will go over the topics of Immunology, Psychiatry, Neurology, Oncology and Laboratory diagnostics. There will be a detailed discussion of how dental treatment might need to be modified based on the patient’s individual situation.  Real-life examples of medical reports/lab tests/diagnostics will be given out and reviewed so the participant can gain practical experience in reading and understanding the type of information that is likely to be sent to them by a medical doctor’s office.

Objectives:

  • Build the medical knowledge to read charts, lab tests and basic diagnostic reports related to Immunology, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Oncology
  • Discuss "Over-reactive" and Under-reactive" immune diseases
  • Modify treatment for patients with common psychiatric diseases i.e. depression, schizophrenia, dementia, bipolar disorder, ADD, ADHD, PTSD, anxiety etc.
  • Administer anesthetic, medications and treatment to patients with MS, Myasthenia gravis, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's, cerebral palsy & seizures
  • Align treatment with medical therapeutics including chemotherapy, surgery, XRT, and HBO
  • Utilize laboratory diagnostics to achieve optimal dental outcomes

Speaker: Barton S. Johnson, DDS, MS is the Director of the General Practice Residency program at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.  He is a co-owner of Seattle Special Care Dentistry, a private practice focusing on the care of medically complex patients.  Bart is a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry, a Fellow in the American Association of Hospital Dentists, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.  His research interest is the molecular biological activities of retinoids and how they are involved in regulating cellular growth, differentiation and oncogenesis.  In his spare time, Dr. Johnson is editor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry.
