Oregon Opportunity
In 2001, the Oregon Legislature approved $200 million for The Oregon Opportunity, a public-private partnership to advance biomedical research at OHSU. Here’s what The Oregon Opportunity has done for OHSU and Oregonians so far:
- The Oregon Opportunity has established a critical mass of research at OHSU. Total research awards for 2007 were $307 million, nearly all of which is out-of-state money. In fact, OHSU has already “earned back” the state’s $200 million investment with $287 in cumulative research awards earned since 2002.
- Since 2002, OHSU has recruited 80 new principal investigators and 258 research team members, adding jobs and expertise to Oregon’s economy.
- The Oregon Opportunity supports OHSU’s role as an incubator of discovery and a catalyst for the region’s bioscience industry. OHSU averages one new breakthrough or innovation every 2.7 days, with more than 4,100 research projects currently under way.
- In 2007, OHSU disclosed 132 new inventions – up from just 32 in 2000. OHSU research has also spun off 33 new companies since 2000, roughly half of which are located in Oregon.
- The Oregon Opportunity has been a catalyst for private support. The Oregon Opportunity campaign, led by the OHSU foundation, raised an additional $378 million from more than 78,000 donors across Oregon and beyond.
