Kids Making Miracles

FLAME LOGO

It began as a simple coin drive in one area elementary school. Today, 21 years later, hundreds of area K-12 students at schools throughout the region have helped the Kids Making Miracles (KMM) program raise $8 million to date for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. In the process they have learned valuable lessons about the value of philanthropy in a new generation of Oregonians.

Every year, KMM engages kids in community fundraising programs across Oregon and southwest Washington. Through everything from bake sales to pageants, KMM kids are raising serious money for the hospital. What’s more, they are developing their own organizational and communication skills while gaining early exposure to the power of philanthropy to help others in need.

At the entrance to the hospital there is a miracle garden and at the center is the KMM Eternal Flame.  It always burns brightly as a reminder of the difference Kids Making Miracles has made - so the kids at Doernbecher always know there is someone fighting for them. The walls surrounding the Eternal Flame list the names of every school that has participated in KMM.  Schools that are new to the program will have their name added to the flame so they will become a permanent part of the miracle garden.

Money raised through Kids Making Miracles has supported everything from helping kids with cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis and organ transplants to hospital construction. Revenue from the 2012-2013 Kids Making Miracles program will benefit Doernbecher’s unrestricted fund. Unrestricted gifts are vital to Doernbecher, providing the flexibility to address immediate children’s health care needs and take advantage of unanticipated opportunities.
