Clinical and Research Interests:
Bentson H. McFarland, MD PhD is Professor
of Psychiatry, Public Health, and Preventive Medicine at OHSU;
Adjunct Investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research; and Professor of Pharmacy (by courtesy) at the Oregon State University College
of Pharmacy. In addition, Dr. McFarland is consulting psychiatrist to the Oregon Office of Mental Health Services and the
Multnomah County Division of Behavioral Health.
A board-certified psychiatrist with degrees in epidemiology and biostatistics, Dr. McFarland is a graduate of Yale University,
the California Institute of Technology, the University of Washington, and the University of London. He directs a program of
health services research addressing the impact of managed care on delivery of behavioral health treatments and outcomes.
His research encompasses the pharmacoeconomics and pharmacoepidemiology of psychotropic medications. This
work is supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the
National Institutes of Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, private foundations, and the
pharmaceutical industry.
