OHSU LIBRARY MISSION

The OHSU Library advances the discovery of knowledge by providing access to relevant, quality information. In order to fulfill this mission, the library will:

  • Provide collections and services centered around the needs of our users, regardless of their physical location.
  • Maintain facilities that meet the needs of our users.
  • Recruit and retain an outstanding staff working within an organizational structure which is efficient, flexible, and responsive to changing user needs.

OHSU LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES

The OHSU Library includes the Main Library and the Samuel L. Diack Library at the OGI School of Science and Engineering. The collection of journals and monographs is housed in four places: the Main Library in the BICC, which houses current materials; the OGI Science & Engineering Library on the West Campus; the Old Library on the Marquam Hill Campus, which houses earlier materials; and an offsite storage facility for the oldest materials. The collection at the Isabel MacDonald Library at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center is also available to all OHSU faculty, staff and students. (http://www.ohsu.edu/library/).

Library services are available 7 days a week and include reference services, database searching, interlibrary loans, a photocopy service, and classes. As of July 2007 the Library currently has:

  • 90,409 monograph titles
  • 10,000 books available with electronic access
  • 2,933 purchased journal subscriptions
  • 10,200 journals with electronic access
  • 90 purchased databases

In addition to the traditional print journals and books, the Library provides access to a variety of electronic resources that are available through all OHSU computers. A proxy server allows off campus access to most electronic resources to OHSU faculty, students and staff using their library barcode.

Over 120 databases are available through the Library's database page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/databases, including MEDLINE, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Databases. OHSU PubMed is available with direct linking to subscribed electronic journals. Web of Science (Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index) is available from 1980 to the present and SciFinder Scholar is available on library workstations and can be downloaded to individual workstations. Engineering, technology, and science databases include Compendex and CSA Illumina. Business and general information is available through the Library's EBSCOhost databases. Many of these databases include full-text articles and link to other subscribed full-text journals.

Over 10,000 books are available in electronic format, including collections from AccessMedicine, Books@Ovid, Books 24X7, MDConsult, netLibrary, and Stat!Ref. Included in these collections are books on medicine, nursing, technology, business and a variety of other topics.

Patient/Consumer health information is available through a book collection in the library as well as the EBSCOhost databases Health Source and Alt HealthWatch. A web portal with links to free, high quality health information, including MedlinePlus, is available at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/consumerhealth/. Patients and consumers may request basic health information through Health Information by Mail/E-mail at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/consumerhealth/himrequest.shtml.
