DMICE: Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology

Medical informatics is the field concerned with the acquisition, storage, and use of information in health and biomedicine. Clinical epidemiology is the application of the logical and quantitative concepts and methods of epidemiology to problems (diagnostic, prognostic, therapeutic, and preventive) encountered in the clinical delivery of care to individual patients. As technology and information both become more prevalent in society, the ability to quickly and accurately identify, parse, understand, and utilize that information becomes both more critical and more difficult.

The Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology is an academic and research department in the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine. The department, founded in 1989, was one of the first of its kind in the world. Our pioneering status in the field and our emphasis on the blend of teaching, research, and service uniquely positions us to be both leaders and innovators in medical informatics and clinical epidemiology.

DMICE is part of OHSU's Biomedical Information Communication Center (BICC) and is housed in the BICC Building on the University's Portland campus. The Department Chair is William Hersh, MD and the Vice Chairs are Cynthia Morris, PhD and Joan Ash, PhD.
