Background

Heidi D. Nelson MD, MPH is a Research Professor in the Departments of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology and Medicine at OHSU, Medical Director of the Providence Women and Children’s Program and Research Center, and a Co-Director of the VA Women’s Health Fellowship. Since 1998, Dr. Nelson has been an investigator in the Oregon Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) leading systematic evidence reviews for the US Preventive Services Task Force, National Institutes of Health, and the State of Oregon. Her work has been used in developing multiple clinical recommendations, practice guidelines, and consensus statements, and resulted in many publications. Topics include treatment of menopausal symptoms, including hormonal and nonhormonal therapies, osteoporosis screening, diagnosis, and treatment, screening for sexually transmitted diseases, screening for family and intimate partner violence, BRCA genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility, ovarian cancer screening, and screening for speech and language delay in children, among others. In her role at Providence, a non-profit integrated health system with services throughout the western US, she plans and facilitates service and research projects that improve health care services for women and children. These include implementation of evidence-based guidelines, some of which resulted from the EPC reviews.
