Women Who Inspire Us: Women in Science

In 2011, a group of OHSU women decided to join together and take on gender discrimination in the scientific research field. Their goal? To create a forum where women could talk about obstacles like salary discrimination, promotion bias and sexual harassment at work.

They started with happy hour events where women from OHSU would gather to support each other and quickly took on a project to negotiate improved parental leave and lab safety standards for expecting and new parents.

After this success, the group began to expand outside of OHSU. Women in Science is now open to anyone who supports its goals, regardless of gender, race, age or area of work. The group hosts workshops, peer mentorship groups, outreach events and negotiation boot camps.
