About Congenital Spinal Malformations

Congenital spinal malformations are spine conditions caused by birth defects. They include:

  • Cerebral palsy, caused by brain damage
  • Muscular dystrophy, caused by a gene defect
  • Spina bifida, caused by lack of folic acid

These conditions usually develop before birth, but may not cause symptoms until your child is older. Symptoms include:

  • Problems moving (rolling over, walking, jumping)
  • Weak muscles
  • Problems with speech, hearing or vision
  • Other symptoms

Symptoms of congenital spinal malformation are different for each person. Make an appointment at OHSU Spine Center to speak with a spine specialist about treatment options.
