Veena Patel was born in Suva, Fiji and immigrated to Santa Cruz, CA with her family at the age of 9. She graduated from UC Irvine with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. While at UC Irvine, she participated in emergency ultrasound research in addition to aiding in the development of an animal model for neurotrophic keratitis in a neuro-ophthalmology research lab. Veena has always enjoyed teaching and throughout her undergraduate years she tutored basic sciences for Boys Hope Girls Hope of Southern California and organic chemistry for the physical sciences department at UCI. After college she worked as a research assistant in the monoclonal antibody department at Santa Cruz Biotechnology before pursuing a master’s degree in physiology and biophysics at Georgetown University. At Georgetown, Veena became actively involved with the organization Water Equals Life and helped with fundraising for the organization’s well building project in Kenya. After spending some time on the East Coast, she returned to California to attend Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. While at Touro, Veena traveled to Ethiopia for a global health summer internship. She also served as a treasurer for Sigma Sigma Phi and participated in various volunteer events through Rock Medicine, NorCal Hoyas and First Graduate. Veena looks forward to a career in academic medicine and is considering a career in a medical subspecialty. Outside of medicine, her interests include traveling, hiking, yoga, running, music, wine tasting and vegetarian cooking.
