OHSU Clinic: Interventional Radiology Clinic

Clinic Description

The Interventional Radiology Clinic at OHSU - Dotter Interventional Institute, provides consultation, evaluation, and follow-up for patients with the broad range of conditions amenable to diagnosis and treatment with image-guided techniques (except the heart and brain).  Referrals are accepted from all practitioners.  Patients may also schedule appointments directly with an Interventional Radiologist for consultation. Collaborative multidisciplinary care with other OHSU specialists is common for complex disorders such as liver cancer, Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangectasia (HHT), vascular malformations, portal hypertension, and aortic aneurysms in order to optimize patient outcomes. At all times we consider patients and families as equal members of the treatment team.

Some of the conditions commonly treated by Interventional Radiologists include arterial and venous blockages, uterine fibroids, varicose veins, primary and metastatic cancer of the liver, deep venous thrombosis, aneurysms of the arteries, portal hypertension (chronic liver disease), biliary obstruction, urinary tract obstruction and vascular malformations.

Interventional Radiology is the specialty that developed image-guided minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of disorders. Using X-rays, ultrasound, or CT scans for guidance, and usually under local anesthesia with mild sedation, catheters or needles are inserted temporarily through tiny incisions in   the skin to perform the procedures. In most instances patients return home the same day. All of the Interventional Radiologists at OHSU are board certified in this specialty. The multidisciplinary Dotter Interventional Institute is one of the leaders in the field in clinical practice, training, and research. Dr. Charles Dotter, for whom the Institute is named, originated arterial angioplasty in 1964 at OHSU, followed by vascular stents, and many other basic interventional techniques.
