Letter from The Director

wilsonphotoDear Physicians and Health Care Professionals,

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the Chairman of the Casey Eye Institute.  In my role, I have the opportunity to partner with many of you in caring for patients with complex eye disease.  Casey was built to bring the latest technologies and treatments to our region, and we are pleased that we can work side by side with you to offer these to your patients.  Today we are increasing the numbers of clinical trials and are excited to be moving into phase one gene therapy trials for retinal degenerative diseases.  Oregonians are benefitting by being some of the first in the nation to access these new therapies.

In an era where a shortage of ophthalmologists is predicted, we are increasing the numbers of residents in training and increasing the numbers of fellowship trained subspecialists in cornea, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, oculo-plastics and pediatrics.  As the only academic health center in Oregon, OHSU’s Casey Eye Institute is working hard to increase the number of trainees to make sure that our citizens are well served for decades to come.

We hope we are meeting your continuing education needs.   We are always open to hearing from you should you wish to see additional continuing education in specific areas.

Finally, we are proud that we are ranked in the top ten NEI funded Eye Research Institutes in the United States.  We have held this ranking consistently for many years now.  Our research faculty  are making significant contributions in many areas including inflammatory diseases, gene therapy, glaucoma and retinal diseases.

I hope that you will always feel free to contact me if you have thoughts on how we might better meet the needs of our community.  We are grateful for your partnership and input.

Warm Regards,

David J. Wilson, MD
