Meet Sancy Leachman, M.D., Ph.D.
I’m the chair of the Department of Dermatology and director of the Melanoma Research Program at the Knight Cancer Institute. As a dermatologist and researcher, I use basic science research and state-of-the-art technology to combat skin cancer. I have also launched the War on Melanoma.
In my role, I also bring together researchers and doctors specializing in melanoma and other skin cancers to bring knowledge and expertise from the laboratory into the clinical realm — what we call “bench to bedside” medicine.
Overall, if you can prevent skin cancer from happening in the first place, you can reduce the number of deaths from it. At the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, we use a multidisciplinary approach: This means we collaborate with experts throughout OHSU to help protect and treat skin cancer.
I believe that success in science can be summed up in three words: innovation, resilience and persistence: You have to have all of them to make change happen.
I have high expectations for our team here. Winning the war against skin cancer? It’s totally doable.
And we can do it.
