ORBERA™

The ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss  System is a comprehensive, non-surgical, two-part program that includes a  silicon balloon that is placed in your stomach to reinforce portion control.

The program is intended for adults  who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 – 40 and who have already attempted other  non-surgical weight reduction alternatives. You and your doctor should talk to  see if this option is right for you.

How does it work?

This outpatient procedure is performed  under a mild sedative. The ORBERA balloon, which is thin and soft, is placed in  the stomach with the use of an endoscope, a medical device with a light  attached that helps the doctor look inside your stomach. It is then filled with  saline until it is about the size of a grapefruit. The balloon takes up space  in your stomach, creating a sensation of fullness, and helps you eat smaller  meals. The procedure normally takes about 20-30 minutes and you can generally  go home the same day.

This  procedure is part of a 12-month program that includes coaching from our team of  bariatric experts: dietitians, psychologists and nurse practitioners. After six  months, the balloon is deflated and removed endoscopically, in a similar method  to the way it was placed. Counseling then continues for an additional six  months to ensure that you continue to practice a healthy lifestyle that will  become standard for the rest of your life.

What are the risks?

ORBERA is a fairly safe device.  It remains in the stomach for only six months. Longer durations have been  associated with possible complications, including inflammation of the stomach  lining, balloon deflation and bowel obstruction. Other possible complications  include inadequate weight loss, stomach discomfort, nausea and vomiting,  abdominal or back pain, acid reflux, digestion issues, blockage of food  entering the stomach, and infection.

ORBERA is not to be used if you  are pregnant, planning to become pregnant within six months or breast-feeding.  People who have other internal issues such as stomach irritation or ulcers may  be unable to have ORBERA.

What are the  benefits?

ORBERA is a  non-invasive procedure to help proper portion control. It is temporary and does  not require surgery or incisions.
