FAQS

How successful are your patients at losing weight?

95 percent of the patients who undergo surgery at The OHSU Surgical Weight Reduction Center achieve significant weight loss. Our rates of complication and mortality are well below the national average, with mortality rates for the procedure below one percent.

Why is laparoscopic surgery important?

Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive, heals faster and leaves fewer scars. We perform the majority of procedures laparoscopically, to help our patients get back on their feet quicker, with reduced risk of infection and complications.

How long will I be in the hospital?

You could be back home in as few as two or three days. Improved surgical techniques mean you can get back to your normal life – and begin losing weight – much sooner.

Will my insurance cover the surgery?

Many insurance companies will approve bariatric surgery, within certain limitations and under specific circumstances. One important member of your support team will be an insurance expert who can help you negotiate the complex process of gaining insurance approval. Our long relationships with insurance company staff members will help make the process as streamlined as possible.

How should I choose where to have my surgery?

Research has shown a few key indicators that can help you evaluate the quality of a surgical weight loss program.
