Training Programs and Collaborations

OHSU Simulation Centers partner with multiple OHSU programs to support the following efforts: academic curriculum based activities,  required certifications for licensure and employment conditions, meet accreditation standards, and maintain quality, safety and clinical standards.

Programs are categorized by academic programs (SoM, SoN, PA, RDTT, PhD, College of Pharmacy, SoD), hospital quality-safety, nursing and clinical based programs.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is active at all levels of simulation education from students to practicing providers and physicians. The Anesthesia Simulation Program is cutting edge and includes faculty and staff with years of experience and expertise. OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital offers simulation-based training in neonatal resuscitation.  Simulation is an instructional strategy where learners are immersed in realistic scenarios designed to resemble actual experiences. Performance during the scenario is then reviewed with instructors skilled in facilitated debriefing. The comprehensive, simulation-based training in neonatal resuscitation is based on the most recent recommendations put forth by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Steering Committee.  Read More about the NRP.

The Emergency Medicine Simulation program at OHSU is focused on providing a hands-on opportunity in order to improve students confidence and competence; with a large educational focus on the principles of crisis resource management, effective teamwork, leadership and communication all in a real time, high stakes environments.

The purpose of Simulated Code Interdisciplinary Team Training (SCITT) is to train high performing teams to respond quickly and safely in cardio-respiratory arrest situations. The goal of the SCITT program is to improve safety, reliability and patient care by improving communication and avoiding errors. The Code team at OHSU is an interprofessional team that includes a Critical Care Fellow, Anesthesiologist, Respiratory Therapist, Pharmacist and three ICU RNs

The OHSU School of Medicine has integrated several methods of simulation into multiple areas of the curriculum: Standardized Patients, Manikin-Based Simulations & Task Training. Read more about undergraduate medical education simulation.

The OHSU PA Program uses Task Training Simulation and Manikin-based Simulation within the PAST 526 Applied Clinical Skills course during the spring term of the Academic year. During this course students are taught how to perform many different skills that they will use as Physician Assistants. In order for the student to demonstrate proficiency with these skills, different simulation types are used. Not only is this a great way for students to practice (sometimes repeatedly) but in many instances it eliminates the need for a live person to be the recipient of these sometimes invasive procedures.

The Nurse Anesthesia Simulation Program (NAP) is dedicated to providing students with hands on experiences in a controlled simulated clinical environment. Highly structured clinical opportunities will be provided to allow integration of simulated acquired skills into real time patient care experiences.

The College of Pharmacy jointly awards the Doctor of Pharmacy degree between Oregon State University and Oregon Health & Science University. Students spend their first two years on the main OSU campus in Corvallis.The third year is spent on the OHSU campus at the Center for Health and Healing, prior to their fourth year clerkships.

 

Statewide Simulation and Clinical Learning Centers

The Statewide Simulation & Clinical Learning Center (SCLC) was developed through the collaborative vision of the OHSU Schools of Medicine and Nursing. Our high-fidelity learning environments feature state-of the-art manikins, equipment, and the use of standardized patients to create innovative and meaningful experiential learning experiences. Our internationally renowned faculty and partners collaborate to implement simulation throughout our curriculum.  We collaborate across the academic institutions, within the OHSU community and throughout the state of Oregon to provide high quality simulation training aimed towards improving patient care and enhancing safety in health care. We are recognized as a Laerdal Center of Education Excellence.
