Cost of attendance

The cost of attendance at the OHSU School of Nursing can vary by student. Student fees may include charges for lab fees, building fees, incidental fees, NSNA dues, student activity fees, health service fees, major medical fees (if necessary), and more.

OHSU tuition promise
Students enrolling at OHSU in eligible programs will pay the same tuition rate throughout their nursing program. Students must be in good academic standing and continuously enrolled in their designated program to qualify. View the Tuition and Fees page for more information.  

Students are charged for medical insurance unless they can prove current coverage. Coverage must be with major medical insurance at levels required by OHSU. Students must complete a waiver from the Student Health Services Office each academic year to have this charge waived from their final bill. View the OHSU online fee book for more information or call the Office of Financial Aid at 503-494-7800.

Applicants who live in one of the following counties may be eligible for in-state tuition. Read the residency policy for specific requirements. Eligibility for in-state tuition is subject to the same criteria used for determining Oregon residency.  Eligible students must notify the Registrar's Office by the first day of the academic term.  Tuition for terms before the date the student notifies the Registrar's Office will be at the non-resident rate.

Residents living in the following counties may qualify for in-state tuition:

  • California State Counties: Del Norte, Siskiyou, and Modoc
  • Idaho State Counties: Nez Perce, Idaho, Adams, Washington, Payette, Canyon, and Owyhee
  • Nevada State Counties: Washoe and Humboldt
  • Washington State Counties: Pacific, Wahkiakum, Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania, Klickitat, Benton, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield, and Asotin

Please note that the nonresident portion of tuition is waived for post-masters and post-Baccalaureate Ph.D., post-master DNP, and post-Baccalaureate DNP students from states participating in the Western Regional Graduate Program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. We encourage students to apply for internal/external scholarships and federal student aid. Last year, over 150 students received a scholarship or grant award to help support their nursing education. Typical awards range from $3,000 - $6,000 per individual for the academic year. Explore the resources below for a variety of scholarship and grant opportunities. 

For current and new students

SON Institutional Scholarship Application 2024-2025

Through donor giving, the School of Nursing offers institutional scholarships to nursing students who meet various academic, financial, diverse, regional, and program criteria. All incoming and current students can submit a completed OHSU SON scholarship application and the FAFSA application each year to be considered for these internal SoN awards.

Application Deadline: Priority Deadline is April 1, 2024. Applications received after the priority deadline will be considered for second priority and awarded if funding allows.

Street Nursing Team Scholarship 2024

The Street Nursing Team scholarship is a grant established to develop street nursing scholars who will help shape a workforce sensitive and responsive to the complexities of homelessness thereby improving health care delivery and health outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must have experience or a strong interest in working with people experiencing homelessness and be enrolled in the Ashland Accelerated BS in Nursing Program.

Scholarship recipients of this award will receive disbursements starting winter 2024. Please note that the scholarship disbursement will be applied directly to recipients tuition balance for the winter 2024, spring 2024, and summer 2024 term once your financial aid has been exhausted.

Scholars for a Healthy Oregon (SHOI)

Designed for students matriculating into the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in: Adult-Gerontology/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Midwifery, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. SHOI provides full tuition and applicable fees for students who agree to practice as a healthcare practitioner in a rural or underserved community in Oregon for a minimum of one year longer than the total years of funding received.

Oregon Nursing Education Academy Scholarship 2024-2025

The purpose of Oregon Nursing Education Academy is to recruit, retain, and educate nurses in Oregon and in Health and Human Services Region 10 (Washington, Idaho, Alaska) to serve as clinical nurse faculty and preceptors to increase the nursing workforce and improve health equity. This scholarship is for Masters of Nursing Education students only. Please click on the application to view additional eligibility requirements.

OHSU 30-30-30 Workforce Initiative

The OHSU OCNE Community College Faculty Scholars for OHSU 3030 workforce initiative provides funding to educate nurses committed to working as clinical nurse faculty and increase the nursing workforce. To be eligible for this funding, you must:

  • Be in your first or second year of the Masters in Nursing Education program
  • Be nominated by the Director of an OCNE Partner Community College
  • Be a full-time faculty member at a nominating OCNE Partner Community College
  • Be an Oregon resident eligible for in-state tuition
  • Sign the OCNE Nurse Faculty Scholars for OHSU 30-30-30 workforce initiative funding and service agreement for the Masters in Nursing Education.

The Health Equity Grant is a grant established to provide funding to increase the number and diversity of Family Nurse Practitioner students, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner students and Nurse-Midwifery students who are committed to working with rural, urban and tribal underserved populations in Oregon.

Students can be in their first, second or third year of the D.N.P. program. Scholarships will be awarded to 21 students for $21,700 annually. Students who are awarded will receive the funding for the time remaining in their program, up to three years. Students do not need to re-apply once awarded.

OHSU Nurse Faculty Scholarship

The OHSU Nurse Faculty Scholars for OHSU 3030 workforce initiative provides funding to educate nurses who are committed to working as clinical nurse faculty, and to increase the nursing workforce.

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be in your first or second year of the Master's in Nursing Education program
  • Be nominated by the Campus Associate Dean or the Undergraduate Portland Assistant Dean
  • Be a full-time faculty member at OHSU
  • Be a resident of Oregon and therefore eligible for Oregon in-state tuition
  • Sign the OHSU Nurse Faculty Scholars for OHSU 30-30-30 Workforce initiative funding and Service Agreement for the Master's in Nursing in Nursing Education workforce initiative
  • Be and remain in good academic standing

MatCare

The Advancing Nurse-Midwifery Education to Improve Maternal and Rural Underserved Healthcare (RUSH) Grant is a grant that provides financial support for nurse-midwifery students. This financial support is critical to help diversify the nurse-midwifery workforce and is intended for nurse-midwifery students who are committed to working with rural and/or underserved communities after graduation.

Students can be in their first, second or third year of the D.N.P. program. Scholarships will be awarded to 18 students for $34,304 annually, along with a stipend to offset living expenses. Students who are awarded will receive the funding for the time remaining in their program, up to three years. Students do not need to re-apply once awarded.

The Michaelson Gerontological Nursing Scholarship

The goal of this scholarship is to prepare advanced practice nurse educators with the enhanced knowledge needed to address the complex health care needs of older adults. This scholarship supports students in the second year of the Master of Nursing programs at OHSU School of Nursing who are committed to the health and health care needs of older adults. Up to $3000 will be awarded to accepted applicants.

The Hearst Endowed Scholarship

The goal of the Hearst Endowed Scholarship is to support clinical scholarship and prepare advanced practice nursing students for the complex care needs of older persons. This scholarship provides funding for students enrolled in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs at OHSU's School of Nursing who are in the program's final year and whose focus is on gerontological advanced practice nursing. Up to $15,000 will be awarded to accepted applicants.

Carol Howe Scholarship in Nurse-Midwifery

Carol Howe, DNSc, CNM, FACNM developed the first nurse-midwifery education program and faculty practice in Oregon. Dr. Howe is an advocate who has advanced nurse-midwifery locally, and nationally, creating a legacy of highly trained and skilled clinicians in her field. This scholarship supports nurse-midwifery student education and practice, enabling students to continue Dr. Howe's legacy.

School of Nursing Ph.D. Student Scholarship

All applicants to the Ph.D. program will be given full consideration for an award to cover their tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend for the first four years of the program. 

Ph.D. applicants will automatically be considered.

Harding Loan

Requirements: For current students needing additional assistance not provided by financial aid. These loans carry a 5% fixed interest rate which begins at the time of the loan. The loans come due three months after graduation. Only available to students who are not fully funded through financial aid. The loan amount is $850 per term.

Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP)

Designed to prepare qualified nurse educators to fill faculty vacancies and increase the number of nurses entering the workforce by supporting Schools of Nursing that prepare graduates to serve as faculty. Eligible students at OHSU SON include those in the Ph.D., D.N.P., and M.N.E. programs. OHSU makes loans available to students enrolled in these programs and requires students to complete specific nursing education courses as part of their program. Following graduation, the NFLP offers partial loan cancellation (up to 85%) for graduates who serve as full-time faculty at an accredited SON. 

In addition, beginning in fall 2020, students in DNP programs participating in the program will receive loan forgiveness following graduation by becoming employed in their specialty and agreeing to serve as a full-time preceptor (for one student per term) in partnership with OHSU SON or another accredited school of nursing.

Primary Care Loan Forgiveness (PCLF)

The PCLF was designed to meet workforce needs in rural Oregon for primary care providers. PCLF participants are eligible for forgivable loans for tuition and fees only, in exchange for a service obligation to an approved rural Oregon practice site.

Evalee C. Schwarz charitable trust for education loan

Interest-free loan for undergraduate or graduate students with exceptional academic performance and signification financial need. The amount given is between 5,000-$15,000.

Federal Loan Forgiveness

For current students needing additional assistance not provided by financial aid. These loans carry a 5% fixed interest rate which begins at the time of the loan. The loans come due three months after graduation. Only available to students who are not fully funded through financial aid. Amount: cost of eligible loans minus 120 monthly payments.

Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

In exchange for a two-year service commitment, participants receive 60% of their total nursing education loan balance. Amount: 60% of nursing education loan balance.

Faculty Loan Repayment Program

Individuals selected to participate agree to serve on the faculty of an accredited health professions college or university for two years. The government pays up to $40,000 of the participant's student loans and provides funds to offset the tax burden. Award amount: up to $40,000 towards nursing loan repayment.

National Health Service Corps

Minimum of two-year full-time commitment to work at an NHSC-approved site. Amount: up to $170,000 loan repayment.

Loan Repayment

Loan repayment programs offer tax-free funds for qualified health care providers working in approved disciplines at eligible practice sites, in exchange for a service obligation.

Federal Financial Aid

All students are encouraged to complete the free application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) as part of applying for institutional scholarships and grant awards.  Review more information on the FAFSA website.

Educational grants are provided by many non-profit and governmental organizations to provide financial support for students in key populations critical to providing primary care in crucial regions or with targeted populations. These funds are available on a limited basis and may have specific qualifications or requirements that recipients must comply with to be eligible. Please see the following list below for the current educational grants that are available to students.

NINR Graduate Partnership Training Program in Biobehavioral Research

Students must be accepted by both the NIH and the OHSU School of Nursing. Funding amount is for tuition, fees, stipend and travel.

The Rural Health Track

The Rural Health Track is a rural practice-focused option within the OHSU School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. It is designed to prepare expert rural advanced practice nurses and leaders needed to improve the health and health care outcomes of rural communities.

HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program

Students enrolled at the BS or MN level who agree to work for at least two years after graduation at a facility with a critical shortage of nurses. Preference is given to students with zero EFC, as their FAFSA indicates. The scholarship award covers the total cost of attendance plus a stipend.

Minority Nurse Scholarship Program

For 3rd or 4th year in an undergraduate nursing program or any stage in the Accelerated BS nursing program, racial or ethnic minority, a minimum of 3.0 GPA. Scholarship awards amount to $3,000 to $5,000.

National Black Nurses Association Scholarships

Undergraduate students enrolled in a nursing program with at least one year remaining. Applicants must be members of the NBNA and their local chapter. The scholarship award amount of $1,000 to $6,000.

National League Nursing (NLN)-Foundation Faculty Scholarship Award

National Student Nurses Association Foundation Scholarship

Available to undergraduate and RN-BS students taking at least six credits per term. Applicants must be involved in student nursing organizations and community health activities and have documented academic success and financial need. There is a $10 fee for this application. The scholarship award amount of $1,000 to $7,000.
