Residency and Fellowships | Department of Surgery

About our programs

The Department of Surgery prides itself on its comprehensive residency and fellowship training programs, emphasizing academic excellence and utilizing a team approach in educating future surgeons.

We are dedicated to assisting residents and fellows in achieving their diverse career goals, whether it be practicing general surgery in a rural area or attaining a faculty position in an urban academic medical center.

We are committed to teaching an innovative curriculum that not only fosters technical skill but a strong foundation of knowledge. Our state-of-the-art surgical simulation center, VirtuOHSU, opened in September 2014 with the highly versatile space supporting open, laparoscopic, endoscopic and microscopic technical skills training using task trainers, virtual reality, and synthetic, animal, or cadaveric tissues.

Resident and fellow involvement in research is also encouraged within each division, producing many published articles and presentations at local, regional, and national conferences each year.

We offer a collegial learning environment with full support from the OHSU Office of Graduate Medical Education, whose services include a Resident and Fellow Wellness Center with free, confidential counseling and coaching services provided on site. Our Program Directors and Program Coordinators maintain an open-door policy, as does our Department Chair. We desire that our residents and fellows are well-rounded individuals who are successful in preserving a healthy work-life balance.

Thank you for your interest in our training programs. We are happy to answer your questions and share more of what the OHSU Department of Surgery has to offer. For more information, check out our site or contact the Surgery Education team.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The Department of Surgery recognizes the widespread existence of systemic and structural racism in our community and nation. We are committed to combating this at all levels. By doing so we will address health inequities and promote diversity and inclusion. Join us in this effort as we strive to enhance our culture of care and tolerance.
