The 2020 graduating class of OHSU's Radiation Therapy Program  tied for the highest national board mean scaled score, with 100% pass rate, for the 10 graduating students.

Despite the impact of COVID-19 on their didactic and clinical education during 2020 spring and summer terms, the cohort adapted, worked hard, graduated and passed the ARRT board certification exam top in the nation. We look forward to the contribution of this group to quality patient treatment and care in radiation oncology.

OHSU's Brachytherapy Program, led Jenna Kahn, M.D., is the first program in the United States to use the Elekta Geneva Universal Gynecological Applicator. This provide an advantage for patients as Dr. Kahn and her team are better able to maximize the therapeutic ratio than can other programs.

Nima Nabavizadeh, associate professor, and his research team, were featured at the 2021 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting for their research project, Bridge-to-transplant external-beam radiation therapy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: A utilization analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database (Abstract 2078). Dr.  Nabavizadeh discussed the project's finding at an ASTRO news briefing and at Poster Q&A 01 - Session 01 - Gastrointestinal Cancer and Nonmalignant Disease. Charles R. Thomas, Jr., M.D., department chair, has been selected to serve on the Special Expert panel for the NCI Gastrointestinal Steering Committee (GISC). The role of the GISC is to implement an efficient and transparent process that will identify and promote the "Best Science" in clinical research of adult gastrointestinal cancers by addressing the design and prioritization of phase 3 trials and large phase 2 studies within the National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN). 

The GISC membership is composed of representatives from the NCTN gastrointestinal disease committees, the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP), and Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs), along with biostatisticians, patient advocates, NCI staff, and other experts in gastrointestinal cancers.  The steering committee provides a forum for critical review of concepts for new trials by a broad spectrum of experts from across the NCI-supported clinical trials enterprise.  The roster and more information is available at the GISC member roster

The celebration takes place during the week of November 8th to commemorate the discovery of the x-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895.

John Holland, M.D., has been awarded emeritus status by Elena Andresen, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost of OHSU. Emeritus is an honorary title for a retired faculty member which recognizes distinguished past service to the institution. Dr. Holland retired from the Department of Radiation Medicine in July 2020 after 26 years of service at OHSU.

Aaron Grossberg, M.D, Ph.D.’s has been awarded a grant thru OHSU's Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research (CEDAR) for his unique proposal titled, “CoVID Prediction Hub of Oregon – U.S. County COVID-19 Prediction“. This  project involves a computational approach to predict future CoVID hotspots based on characteristics we find to promote spread along with real-time crowdsourced fever measurements.

Timur Mitin, M.D., Ph.D. and Wencesley Paez, Ph.D. have been selected for funding under Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute's Biomedical Innovation Program – Digital Health program for their proposal A Smartphone Mobile Application Using Artificial Intelligence for Pain Control and Management for Bone Metastases. The BIP-Digital Health program accelerates the delivery of healthcare technologies in order to improve human health. Congrats to Dr. Mitin and Dr. Paez!

Kiri Cook, M.D. has been appointed at Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Radiation Medicine.  In her role, Dr. Cook will oversee the clinical research operations of the department. Dr. Cook's research interests focus on analyzing and improving the patient’s experience during treatment.  She has particular interests in patient-reported outcomes research, patient education, and supportive care.

Jenna Kahn, M.D. has been appointed at Medical Student Clerkship Director in the Department of Radiation Medicine.  In her role, Dr. Kahn will advise medical students who are interested in radiation oncology. She will continue in her role as Faculty Advisor of the Medical Student Interest Group. Dr. Kahn is considered one the emerging leaders and dominant forces nationally on medical education for radiation oncology.

The Russian Society of Clinical Oncology (RUSSCO) has written practical recommendations of the Russian Society of Clinical Oncology for the provision of cancer care in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. These recommendations were created due to the need for cancer care in a pandemic and the maximum protection of patients and medical personnel. Timur Mitin, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor and medical director of the Tuality OHSU Cancer Center, took part in writing and discussing these recommendations.

The Grossberg Lab was awarded a grant for their novel proposal titled “Heart Rate Variability for the Early Detection of Pancreatic Cancer”. Project Purple and the Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research Center (CEDAR) are co-sponsoring this novel work.  While Dr. Grossberg is the PI, his collaborators include Diane Simeone, M.D. at NYU along with Tony Hollingsworth, Ph.D. and Kelsey Klute, M.D. at the University of Nebraska. Fitness trackers and is being sponsored by Project Purple.  WHOOP fitness trackers will be utilized in this trial.

The Department of Radiation Medicine is very pleased to report that Kristina H. Young, MD, PhD was recently selected to receive the OHSU School of Medicine Alumni Association’s 2020 Early Career Achievement Award.

After completing her M.D.-Ph.D. training at OHSU, she was a Holman Research Pathway Resident. Since completing residency, Dr. Young has been a physician-scientist faculty at the Earle A Chiles Research Institute. Her Tumor Microenvironment Laboratory has been productive and continuously funded.

Roseburg Community Cancer Center

09/27/2019 OHSU signed a Professional Service Agreement with the Roseburg Community Cancer Center (CCC) allowing OHSU’s Department of Radiation Medicine to provide all radiation oncology physician services for the cancer center. Starting January 1, 2020, the Department of Radiation Medicine will add three new physicians to its roster in an effort to extend its services to the citizens of Roseburg, Oregon.

09/23/2019 The Department of Radiation Medicine has received full reaccreditation of its Medical Physics Residency Program from the the Board of Directors of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP). The program has been reaccredited through December 31, 2024.

09/10/2019 Aaron Grossberg, M.D., Ph.D. and Josh Walker, M.D., Ph.D. on have been named 2019 Lamfrom Laureates. The Knight Cancer Institute established the Hildegard Lamfrom Research Scholar Awards to support promising early-stage cancer researchers at OHSU as they reach critical career transitions. The awards provide up to $100,000 over a two-year period. Congratulations Dr. Grossberg and Dr. Walker!

08/27/19 Mara Rosenberg, has been awarded a research grant from the Radiological Society of North America to study cachexia, a severe form of muscle wasting, in patients with pancreatic cancer. Ms. Rosenberg is using computed tomography scans to track muscle loss and she is correlating these imaging results with next generation sequencing to identify mutations and other gene alterations that influence the development of cachexia. Her goal is to reveal details about the mechanisms driving cachexia, which could open new paths for treatment. Her mentor is Aaron Grossberg, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine.

06/28/19 Arthur Hung, M.D. has been formally promoted to the rank of Associate Professor (Radiation Medicine and Ophthalmology). This is a major milestone in the career of a faculty member. Dr. Hung joined the Radiation Medicine faculty in 2002 after finishing his residency at the University of Texas – MD Anderson Cancer Center.

05/29/19 John Holland, M.D. was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (ACR) at the annual ACR meeting in Washington, DC. The ACR Fellowship is one of the highest honors the ACR can bestow on a member in good standing. ACR Fellows demonstrate a history of service to the College, organized radiology, teaching, and/or research. Only 10 percent of College members have been awarded this honor.
