  • Rad to protocol the exam, including which eye, muscle of interest, plane (axial or coronal) and eye movement directions (right to left, or up & down movement of the eyes).
  • Instruct the patient to keep their head still and only move their eyes.
  • Place a piece of paper on the head coil that has five dots across the page (AXIAL) or 5 dots up and down (CORONAL). See images below for examples of dot placement.
  • The slice must go through the muscle of interest.
  • The tech will have the pt look to the far right or most superior dot then continue to the next dot until all five are completed. You will tell the patient "look at number 1" for the first dynamic, "look at number 2" for the 2nd dynamic, and so on.
  • Have the images check by Rad before the pt gets off the table.
Head Coil
Localizer Mode Slice Gap FAT SAT FOV Scan Range
Right Coronal Scout Scout orbits individually. Adjust gap so 1 slice is through attachment at the orbit, and second slice is posterior to globe. Use for planning axials and sagittals through muscle bodies.
Left Coronal Scout Scout orbits individually. Adjust gap so 1 slice is through attachment at the orbit, and second slice is posterior to globe. Use for planning axials and sagittals through muscle bodies.
AXIAL Bilateral CINE dynamic BFFE 3 mm 0mm None 130mm x 112mm Cover entire orbital rectus muscle body. 5 dynamics. Each dynamic should be about 8 seconds.
Right SAG CINE dynamic BFFE 3mm 1.5mm None 200mm x 158mm Cover entire orbital rectus muscle body. Each dynamic should be about 10 seconds.  Sense POS factor is sufficient for foldover suppression if FOV is kept above 200mm AP. Position slices so there is a minimum of air in front of the orbits. Plan off of scouts, include entire muscle body. Adjust gap to 1.5mm if needed for coverage.
LEFT SAG CINE dynamic BFFE 3mm 1.5mm None 200mm x 158mm Cover entire orbital rectus muscle body. Each dynamic should be about 10 seconds.  Sense POS factor is sufficient for foldover suppression if FOV is kept above 200mm AP. Position slices so there is a minimum of air in front of the orbits. Plan off of scouts, include entire muscle body. Adjust gap to 1.5mm if needed for coverage.
CORONAL Bilateral CINE dynamic BFFE 3mm 0mm- 1.5mm None 123mm x 106mm Sense POS 2 effective for fold over suppression.  Plan perpendicular to medial and lateral rectus muscles.
AXIAL Bilateral T1 dynamic TSE 3mm 0.2mm None 150mm x 150mm
