Marjorie Grafe, M.D., Ph.D.
In 2003, Dr. Marjorie Grafe joined the Research Division of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (APOM) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Her primary appointment is in the Department of Pathology, where she is Professor, Vice Chair for Education and Medical Director of the Neuropathology Division. She also maintains an active, comprehensive clinical neuropathology practice.
Dr. Grafe is an active educator at both the medical school and post-graduate levels. She is a member of the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and teaches in a number of SOM courses. She is Director of the Neuropathology Fellowship Program and participates in the training of residents in Pathology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery.
Dr. Grafe’s primary research interests involve ischemic brain injury. She has joined with investigators at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and OHSU to study cerebral ischemia in the adult, and she has a particular interest in the study of perinatal ischemic brain injury.
Dr. Grafe oversees APOM’s histopathology lab, which provides analytical services for several of our research projects. She supervises the histology technicians in routine histology, immunohistochemistry, and development of new immunohistochemistry protocols and other techniques. She also works closely with the postdoctoral fellows to teach them the appropriate interpretation of histopathology for their projects, and she provides quality control for pathology interpretation as needed.
Dr. Grafe received the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Stanford University in 1976 and the Ph.D. in Neurosciences from the University of Florida in 1981. In 1985, she earned the M.D. from Stanford University and completed post-graduate training in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology at UCSD in 1989. Prior to coming to OHSU in 2003, she served on the faculty at UCSD and UTMB.
Halina Offner, Ph.D.
Dr. Halina Offner is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). She also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Offner's research interests include multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), autoimmunity, neuroimmunology, and stroke. She is the Principal Investigator on a study entitled “Neuroprotective Effects of Estrogen and Testosterone in EAE.” This is one of three research projects funded by an NIH Program Project Grant awarded to Dr. Patricia Hurn in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Offner graduated from the University of Copenhagen Medical School in 1976. The focus of her doctoral studies was the immunology of multiple sclerosis. In 1990, she relocated to Oregon and joined the faculty at OHSU.
