Cerebrovascular Research

The Cerebrovascular Research Division is an interdisciplinary research program directed by Nabil Alkayed, MD, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair for Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at OHSU and recognized worldwide for his advances in stroke research. The program is designed to bring basic scientists and clinician-scientists together to conduct basic research related to blood vessel biology and translational research aimed at developing more effective treatments to improve outcomes for patients who experience cerebrovascular events such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, migraine, and traumatic brain injury. Clinical and basic science researchers from such diverse specialties as neurodegeneration, trauma, and cardiovascular disease as well as basic neuroscience, pharmacology, and genetics work together to integrate molecular, cellular, and whole-animal systems and break new ground in characterizing blood vessel behavior in normal brain and the mechanisms that underlie cerebrovascular dysfunction after injury.

Program research cores provide shared resources and promote collaborations, efficiency, and productivity as well as the development and dissemination of state-of-the-art experimental models and technology platforms. Currently, two program cores have been established at OHSU: the Imaging Core, led by Ruikang Wang, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering, and the Bioanalytical Lipidomics Core led by Dennis Koop, PhD, professor of physiology and pharmacology.

The program also sponsors lecture series, journal clubs, workshops, and focus groups to facilitate the exchange of ideas, raise awareness of blood vessel diseases and the importance of blood vessel biology, and educate and attract new students, resident, fellows, and faculty to cerebrovascular research. These newcomers are matched with qualified mentors who provide access to resources, training, and help in preparing successful funding applications and manuscripts.
