Congratulations to Laura Villasana and Eric Schnell

Congratulations to Laura Villasana, PhD, APOM Assistant Professor, and her mentor Eric Schnell, MD, PhD on having their recent eNeuro publication "Functional Integration of Adult-Born Hippocampal Neurons after Traumatic Brain Injury" selected as paper of the month.

The paper describes work done by Laura when she was a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Schnell's lab studying the process by which the formation of new neurons in brain is increased after traumatic brain injury, a process called neurogenesis. She found that the new cells functionally integrate in the brain's existing neural networks, although they exhibit unusual morphology and anatomic localization. The relevance of these differences is not clear, and Eric's lab is continuing to explore the potential beneficial vs. maladaptive role of these newly formed cells.
