Congratulations Drs. Sera and Treggiari
04/22/15 Portland, OR
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Val Sera and Dr. Miriam Treggiari on receiving a $150,000 grant from Baxter Biosciences to investigate the use of FEIBA (Factor Eight Inhibitor Bypass Activity) in cardiac surgery. The award will support a randomized, controlled clinical trial for the administration of either FEIBA or placebo in patients undergoing major cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The study will test the hypothesis that FEIBA rapidly corrects post-CPB coagulopathy; thus, reducing blood transfusion requirement after CPB. This grant is special because of its clinical importance, and because it is the first award granted to Val and the first award to Miriam in her role as Director of Clinical Research here at OHSU. The grant is also special because Val and Ann Bingham (who should also be congratulated) conceived of the idea and proposed it to me more than a year ago, but it took for Miriam to join us to be able to move the study forward and get it funded. Congratulations to Val, Miriam, Ann and Lisa Voltolina (who will be running the study).
