Congratulations to Drs. Crescini and Brown for successfully obtaining a $5,000 Research Core grant

Congratulations to Drs. Crescini and Brown for successfully obtaining a $5,000 Research Core grant from the SOM Dean's Office for his proposal titled, "Cefuroxime Pharmacokinetics in Neonatal Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery with Cardiopulmonary Bypass". This proposal is designed to develop a method to measure plasma cefuroxime, an antibiotic used for perioperative prophylaxis in children undergoing cardiac surgery.

This proposal is a preliminary step in the planning of a pharmacokinetic study examining cefuroxime levels and elimination in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. The study will elucidate how neonates eliminate the drug, the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on drug clearance, and the appropriate time for re-dosing. The ultimate goal is to prevent surgical infections and concurrently avoiding drug toxicity.

Congratulations to Drs. Crescini and Brown for their efforts in improving the perioperative management of young children with cardiac defects requiring repair or palliation surgery.
