Dr. KaufmanAfter 19 successful years, Fred Keller stepping down

Dean Richardson has appointed John Kaufman, MD, as Director of the Dotter Interventional Institute, effective July 1, 2012. Frederick Keller, MD, is stepping down as Director.
The freestanding Dotter Interventional Institute in the School of Medicine is charged with developing a multidisciplinary program in interventional therapy with emphasis on interventional education, research and patient care.

Dr. Keller has served as Director of the Institute since 1993. Previously, he was also Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology from 1992 to 2011. Dr. Keller is also the Cook Professor of Interventional Therapy, a post he will continue to hold. Dr. Keller intends to continue to practice interventional radiology, teach and conduct research, focusing on developing new medical devices for use in interventional radiology. He also plans to continue his international outreach work in the field.

Dr. Kaufman has served as the Associate Director of the Institute since 2010. Before joining OHSU in 2000, Dr. Kaufman was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kaufman is a Professor of Interventional Radiology and holds the Frederick S. Keller Endowed Chair of Interventional Radiology. He holds joint appointments in Radiology, Surgery and Medicine (cardiology). An active clinician, researcher and educator, Dr. Kaufman has numerous publications and multiple grants, is a preceptor for medical students and is actively involved in training residents and fellows.  He has had several national leadership positions, including President of the Society of Interventional Radiology from 2008 to 2009.

Dr. Keller"Dr. Kaufman is eminently qualified for this leadership position and I know that his vision for the Institute will enhance its ability to meet its mission,” said Dr. Keller.

Dr. Kaufman received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and a Master’s of Science in Health Care Management from Harvard School of Public Health. He was a resident and a fellow at Boston City Hospital/The University Hospital, where he was also chief resident in radiology.

“Assuming the Directorship of the Institute is a great honor,” said Dr. Kaufman. “Josef Rosch and Fred Keller as Directors made the Dotter Institute at OHSU a world leader in development, training and application of image-guided interventions. My goal is to build on that success so that in 10 years, OHSU is a global destination for patients with complex problems who seek multidisciplinary, innovative, image-guided solutions.”

“Dr. Keller has provided strong leadership at OHSU and within his discipline for many years, and we are grateful for his service and vision,” said Dean Mark Richardson. “While we will miss Fred’s experience in this role, we are fortunate John Kaufman will now serve as the new Director and I look forward to the next phase of distinction and accomplishment from the Institute. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Kaufman.”
