Calendar Alert: 25th Annual Parkinson’s Disease Symposium Sept. 20

Ron Pfeiffer, M.D., will give the keynote address

WHAT:  “Hope in Research” is the focus of the 25th annual symposium for Parkinson’s disease patients, their families and heath care providers. It is presented by the OHSU Parkinson Center of Oregon and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center's Parkinson's Disease Research, Education and Clinical Care Center.

Ron Pfeiffer, M.D.,  a research leader in Parkinson’s disease, will present the keynote address, “Parkinson’s Disease Research: Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going.” Pfeiffer is professor and vice chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He also is co-editor-in-chief of the journal, “Parkinsonism and Related Disorders.”

The program includes Matt Brodsky, M.D., assistant professor of neurology at OHSU, speaking on “Diagnostic Research and Gene Therapy.” Julie Carter, adult nurse practitioner and OHSU professor, will discuss “Alternative Therapies: Current Research for Parkinson’s Disease.” And Penny Hogarth, M.D., associate professor of movement disorders at OHSU, will address “Deep Brain Stimulation: Past, Present and Future.”

Kari  Lyons, a social worker with extensive experience helping families manage chronic illness, will conduct a separate session for caregivers. An exhibit of community resources, information and services for people with Parkinson’s will be available during the lunch break.

 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. The deadline for registration is Friday, Sept. 12. The fee is $30 and includes lunch, refreshments and program materials. To register, please call 503 494-7231. Veterans should call 503 721-1091 to register.
