Jay Nelson, Ph.D.

Jay A. Nelson, Ph.D. is the founder and director of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) and a core scientist at the ONPRC at OHSU. He is a senior molecular virologist with over 200 papers and reviews on a variety of topics in virology and immunology. The primary focus of Dr. Nelson's research over the past 37 years has centered on the molecular pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and flaviviruses, CMV as a vaccine vector, and vaccine adjuvant development. More recently he has worked with Doctors Alec Hirsch and Dan Streblow to develop a Zika-rhesus macaque model to study viral pathogenesis and develop new vaccines and antivirals. These studies have been supported over the years by RO1s, several contracts and program projects at the VGTI at OHSU that include program project grants to develop cytomegalovirus (CMV) as a vaccine vector for HIV with Dr. Louis Picker, another to elucidate mechanisms of HCMV latency and reactivation and regulation of hematopoiesis in bone marrow transplant patients, and an NIAID contract to develop small molecule agonists to innate factors as vaccine adjuvants for RNA viruses. Dr. Nelson was also the Director of the Pacific Northwest Regional Center of Excellence (PNWRCE) in biodefense and emerging infectious diseases, a large consortium of investigators with extensive expertise and basic and translational research capacity directed at a broad range of NIAID category A-C priority pathogens. Dr. Nelson has numerous awards and distinctions including faculty awards from the American Cancer Society as well as being a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He was an editor for the Journal of Virology for 8 years and is currently an Associate editor for PLOS Pathogens.

Dr. Nelson is also the founder and Director of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI; described later in this section). The founding goal of the VGTI was to assemble a multidisciplinary team of scientists to respond to increasingly serious viral disease threats including AIDS, chronic viral infection-associated diseases, newly emerging viral diseases, and infectious diseases of the elderly. The development of vaccines and novel immune and gene therapeutic approaches to these diseases are the major priorities of the faculty.
