Radiation Medicine appoints John Holland vice chair of education

John M. Holland, M.D. is the inaugural vice chair of education in the Department of Radiation Medicine.

"Dr. Holland's dedication to the education and teaching mission at OHSU is unparalleled," said Charles Thomas, Jr., M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine. "Due to the increasing size and number of programs for which our department has direct or indirect responsibility, it now makes sense to devote greater attention to this mission."

Holland directed the department's residency training program for several years, leading the program through multiple accreditations and the expansion of its curriculum and allotment of trainees.

Under Dr. Holland’s leadership, OHSU Radiation Medicine began participating in the Holman Research Pathway of the American Board of Radiology, which allows exceptional residents to condense and accelerate their clinical training and simultaneously complete a post-doc research fellowship. Every OHSU resident who has participated has passed the ABR written and oral board exams during the first round.

Head and neck tumors and thoracic oncology are Holland's special areas of interest. He earned his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. He went on to complete his residency in radiation oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. He joined the OHSU faculty in 1994.

In his new role, Holland will oversee the work of the of the medical student clerkship director, medical residency training program director, medical physics residency program director, associate program directors, and radiation therapy program medical director. Holland will report directly to the department chair.
