The data that Blue Ridge uses for determining these rankings is obtained from the Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT) from the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH itself does not rank the department strengths of the institutions it funds, so independent assessments like Blue Ridge provide a useful - though not definitive - measurement of how the school fits into the nation's overall biomedical research picture.
