Administrative Fellowship Curriculum

The fellowship requires a two-year commitment to complete the clinical fellowship requirements. However, three years are required to complete the associated MBA program.

First Year

  1. Faculty appointment of Instructor
  2. Enrollment in the OHSU/PSU MBA in Healthcare Management Program or similar master’s or certificate program
    1. Three year hybrid program, online with two weekends per semester face to face in Portland.
  3. ACEP Emergency Department Directors Academy Phase I (1 week)Complaint Management; Risk Management; Legally Interviewing, Hiring and Terminating
    1. A 4 ½-day didactic course featuring expert faculty. This phase provides the foundation for the remainder of the Academy and establishes a bond among the participants who continue communication through an exclusive e-list of participants and faculty.
    2. Curriculum includes Billing and Coding; Reimbursement Issues; Staffing and Scheduling Methodologies; Interactions that Create/Prevent; Physician Contracts; Hospital Contracts; Preventing Errors in Emergency Medicine; Engineering patient Flow; Containing Costs, While Providing Prudent Care; Driving Hospital Quality; New Physician Recruiting and Orientation; Productivity and Compensation; The Role of the ED Medical Director; Implementing Effective Peer Review and Physician Profiling; Customer Relations and Patient Satisfaction; The Problem Physician; Effective Conflict Management; Conducting Effective Meetings; Keeping Your Contract; Negotiating Skills; Patient Complaint Management; Risk Management; Legally Interviewing, Hiring and Terminating.
  4. Seven clinical shifts per month at OHSU or affiliate hospitals
  5. Administrative meeting attendance
    1. ED Operations
    2. ED Service Excellence Committee
    3. Patient Flow Committee
    4. CQI Meeting
    5. MD/RN Monthly meeting
    6. Portland ED Director’s Quarterly Meeting
  6. Quality Improvement Project
    1. Completion of Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) web-based instructional modules on quality improvement (www.improvementskills.org)
    2. Under the mentorship of the OHSU ED Director of Clinical Operations
    3. Implement project and present findings at ED operations meeting
  7. Compensation will be at the PGY-4 or PGY-5 level depending upon residency and will include an OHSU paid quarterly clinical bonus. (Estimated total compensation of $90K)

Second Year

  1. OHSU Faculty Appointment of Instructor
  2. Continuation of MBA online and face to face course work at OHSU/PSU two weekends per term or other master's or certificate program.
  3. Seven clinical shifts per month at OHSU or affiliate hospitals
  4. Administrative meeting attendance
    1. ED Operations
    2. ED Service Excellence Committee
    3. Patient Flow Committee
    4. CQI Meeting
    5. MD/RN Monthly meeting
    6. Portland ED Director’s Quarterly Meeting
  5. Quality Improvement Project
