About me
Dr. Samu Shiva is an internal medicine physician and geriatrician. She believes in the saying, “Care is an absolute. Prevention is the ideal.” She fosters overall wellbeing with her patients by delivering care and developing long-term relationships for health promotion, disease prevention and patient education while treating acute and chronic illnesses.
Dr. Shiva always includes the patient as an essential role player in decision making to improve outcomes while respecting variable individual needs at the same time. She also values the information she gleans from her patients’ families as much as the patient, especially in elderly populations.
Dr. Shiva is certified in Lifestyle Medicine, which is the use of lifestyle interventions in the treatment and management of disease. She emphasizes the value of a whole food, plant based diet, physical activity, stress management, and changing your environment to prevent and manage health problems.
Growing up in India exposed Dr. Shiva to hardships, leading to an appreciation for access to standardized care. Having worked in rural Oregon, Tillamook and later in a larger group practice in Portland, gave her over a decade of experience in managing complex conditions by using team-based care.
In Dr. Shiva’s spare time, she nurtures her three growing teenage children. She is also an amateur painter, believing that “creativity is intelligence having fun.” She can also be found travelling, staying close to nature, taking photos, reading, listening to music of all genres, and weaving spirituality into her life wherever she can.
Dr. Shiva is also passionate about volunteer work. She gives back to the community with volunteering, fundraising and participating in as many charitable drives for local and global community throughout the year. She has been on annual medical service trips overseas to provide health care for disaster stricken areas including Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Brazilian border for Venezeulan refugees.
“To keep the body in good health is a duty,” she says. “Otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
