I completed medical school at Midwestern University in Chicago, IL and spent an extra year in medical school to pursue a fellowship in teaching. After medical school I then went on to complete my family medicine residency at the University of Minnesota at an underserved inner-city program in Minneapolis.
At the conclusion of residency, I moved to Salt Lake City, UT to pursue a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Utah.
I have now been in Portland working at Oregon Health Sciences University since 2011. In this time I have established my practice to focus on Primary Care Sports Medicine - helping athletes through their acute injuries and helping them to prevent injuries. I have a special interest in adolescent and young adult female athletes.
Bone health and the female athlete triad (Low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction and low bone mineral density) has become very present in my practice as I have cared for dancers, endurance athletes, and athletic adolescents. Knee injuries and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention has also been a focus of my practice as many of the athletes I care for are at high risk for this.
The second piece of my practice is primary care. At times I serve as a consultant to an athlete during their injuries, which I love and enjoy, however it is an honor to be able to care for an overall athletes health. With my background in family medicine and my added training in sports medicine this becomes a wonderful mixture.
I am also trained as an osteopath and long before I went into family medicine and sports medicine I started to focus in on the musculoskeletal system. As an osteopath we are trained to treat the overall patient and not just the disease. And D.O.s are trained in manual manipulation; I spent an extra year honing in on just these skills and completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in teaching and utilizing manual therapy skills. This has truly been an added bonus throughout my sports medicine career.
In order to give great care to my current patients I have currently closed my practice to new primary care patients unless you fall into a specific category- you are a dancer, you are a high school or collegiate athlete, professional athlete, you are a family member of one of my current patients or if you have special considerations I am always happy to review your case. I am still accepting new patients for athletic injuries, athletic medical problems and musculoskeletal injuries on a consult basis and will provide care for you until your injury has resolved.

Provider was nice and listened to what I had to say. Did movement checks to figure out pain area. Comforted when I was upset. Helped me to understand where pain was coming from and how long it might last and treatment path forward.

Thorough, personable, easy to understand her explanations and plan

I found Dr. Novak very pleasant and she was very good at answering my questions. She was very thorough and I enjoyed her immensely.

The visit went okay, I don't see her as a great doctor or a bad doctor. She didn't really seem to absorb everything That I was saying, the main points, but I went more in the details seems like she wasn't completely concerned. She did help with the injections, the needle point injections, but I really want to delve in deeper and talk about my problems and it seems that she wasn't really that receptive. So not a great doctor, not a bad doctor, somewhere in the middle. It was my first visit, too, I'd have to go back a few more times to really see if it's a fit.

Dr Novak is always amazing.

My experience with Dr. Novak was very good. However, she had an emergency emergency room resident with us who cut into my foot three times. While I know this was an accident he never apologized and I think he should have. I do not have a quarrel with the doctor, but I do have a quarrel with that particular doctor who cut into my foot. Thank you.

I felt good about the thorough eval. I learned my hip joints had nothing between them, at first look of the x-ray, but it was sent to the radiologist for their reading. But, guess I'm ready for a hip replacement. Not happy but needed.

She is exactly the kind of doctor I am looking for. She is knowledgeable, relatable, and a great listener. Her focus in sports medicine gives her a unique edge as a primary care provider that allows her to provide better care to my entire body.

Dr. Novak is one of those extraordinary practitioners that goes steps beyond. Her skills and abilities are crafted through experience and ongoing studies. Graced with kindness, compassion, and a listening ear, I know that my needs are well met. I value that she discusses diverse medical approaches so that I am well informed. Have found that docs often share just one direction of care which is a shortcoming for patients. Dr. Novak’s care is with passion and I know her as a gift. I am grateful for her in my wellness team!

I have not had a ton of contact with her directly - our first appointment i spent a long time with a fellow, second a long time with a med student... she comes in for a summary and that was about it. Didn't to much to help address my pain level and was 90 minutes late for one of our appointments that got rescheduled twice after by her office. My experience isn't great.
- Feb 17, 2019
Everyone was pleasant and professional. No reflection on them, but the stickiness from the electrodes caused a reaction in my skin and I have been scratching and applying hydrocortisone on the little red square spots. Maybe a warning or something...?
- Feb 17, 2019
Dr Novak is usually pretty good, but this appointment she was a bit dismissive. I usually don’t mind having medical students in the room, but they made it even harder to have a good conversation

- Feb 07, 2019
She was super nice and was willing to answer questions but there just wasn’t much that can be done for my injury so I didn’t learn much.
- Feb 07, 2019
She is quite personable and tried to put me at ease, however, at times it felt as though she wasn't fully listening to what I had to say.

I think Melissa Novak is an excellent doctor. She has tremendous follow through, all of my appointments are very thorough, and she's available for any questions that I may have. I've been going to her for a number of years, and I would highly, highly recommend her.
- Feb 01, 2019
She as excellent questions that garnered from me the information needed to give additional information beyond her observation and probing of the injured area. She shared information from the diagnostic tests and gave instructions for treatment as well as precautionary measures to undertake to avoid possible blood clots on a soon to occur 20 hour plane flight that was greatly appreciated.

Dr Novak always listens to my symptoms, finds the problem, then gives me specific exercises and manipulations to address the issue. She also spent a lot of time with me trying to help me figure out what is wrong with my leg.

Hi, Dr. Novak is no doubt very knowledgeable in the area of concussions. However, I have spoken with other neurologists and there was conflict in information... which wouldn't have been an issue except that she was... very hundred percent sure that she was correct. I... grew up in the medical field and worked in the medical field and... I guess the, they're not checking MD's bed side manner at all, but she really lacks bed side manner, and I found her to be quite arrogant. So it was disappointing because my experience at Oasis U has always been just really great. Thank you and I don't think I've ever given a negative review. Well, maybe about one physician, but... I'm 58 years old and, I've never really had such a hard time with somebody. She also spoke... outside*

Dr Novak has been treating me for several months. I feel that since she was unable to determine the cause of my issue she has taken a step back and referred me out. I was sent off still in significant pain without a plan to manage until I could be seen by another dr.
- Jan 12, 2019
Dr. Novak is a great listener, asks direct questions that are easy to answer, and seems genuinely concerned about my quality of life.

- Jan 09, 2019
My interaction with both Dr. Novak and the Fellow, Dr. Suchy, were great. They both spent time with me, asked me a lot of questions, explained what they were thinking and what they were finding, and I left with an answer and a treatment plan.

Dr. Novak is a very caring and responsive provider. She listened very carefully to what I had to say, and took appropriate action to give me a cortisone injection in my right palm. That's exactly what I wanted, and it cured me.
- Dec 17, 2018
really kind doctor, matter of fact, good listener, gives practical advice and doesn't shame me for not being able to fulfill her recommendations
- Dec 16, 2018
Professional, knowledgable. Listened to my concerns and provided an adequate treatment plan.
- Dec 15, 2018
Dr Novak is a great listener and provides excellent feedback
- Dec 13, 2018
Dr. Novak is a good doctor, but at there have been times that she rushed us and seemed rather dismissive - also her nursing staff, there's been a few incidents where they had like student doctors come in and say things, you know, just that weren't - there seems to be an inconsistency with care. We do like Dr. Novak, but I think that there's just some area for improvement - she's a good doctor, but she needs to perhaps be a little more patient and a little more respectful.
