Dr. Shaffer is a perinatologist, specializing in high-risk pregnancies when complex medical issues may arise, and moms and babies need special care. He sees patients with both potential and known problems.

His research focuses on the short-term and long-term health of children diagnosed with a fetal anomaly. He has advanced training in genetics, ultrasound, fetal diagnostics and fetal therapy (interventions to treat fetal anomalies in utero).

Originally from western Pennsylvania, Dr. Shaffer chose OHSU for its dedicated staff, faculty and residents. He likes Portland because it offers the advantages of a city in one of the most beautiful places on earth with outstanding access to the outdoors.

In his free time, Dr. Shaffer enjoys spending time with his wife and two small children. He also skis and loves to play and watch soccer.

Ppregnancy and birth philosophy:

"Working together, we will navigate your pregnancy - normal or medically complex - to keep mom and baby healthy throughout pregnancy and birth."
