Dr. Stathopoulou holds a DDS from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2003) and a DMD from the University of Pennsylvania (2016). She received a certificate in Periodontics from the University of Louisville (2008) and completed a MS (2004) and PhD (2008) at the same institution. 

Following four years of private practice and part-time teaching in her native city of Athens, Dr. Stathopoulou relocated to Philadelphia in 2012 to assume a full-time faculty position at the University of Pennsylvania where she served as the Director of Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Periodontics, and as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs. In 2019 she joined the Oregon Health & Science University as the Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics.

Dr. Stathopoulou's clinical research focuses on the non-surgical treatment of periodontitis and periimplantitis as well as behavioral economics, and has been supported by industry and the NIH/NIDCR; her basic science research focuses on host-bacterial interactions and their role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and is the recipient of several prestigious scholarships and awards.

Dr. Stathopoulou is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has maintained a practice limited to periodontics and implant surgery throughout her academic career.
