Joseph V. Califano, D.D.S, Ph.D. is a professor and periodontist dedicated to providing compassionate and excellent periodontal and dental implant care and inspiring OHSU dental students and residents to share his passion for improving their patients’ oral health and ensuring their comfort.

As a member of the OHSU Dental Faculty Practice, Dr. Califano specializes in the treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases and the surgical placement of dental implants. Available treatment for periodontal (gum) disease includes both non-surgical and surgical/regenerative therapies.

Dr. Califano is a member of OHSU’s School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology. He serves as the School’s Director of Pre-Doctoral Periodontology and has, along with his OHSU colleagues, developed an educational program in Computer Guided Implant Dentistry for both pre-doctoral students and dental residents in Periodontics.

Dr. Califano’s research interests include the pathogenesis and immunopathology of periodontitis, aggressive forms of periodontitis, microbial genetics of periodontitis associated bacteria, and computer guided implant dentistry. He has authored 27 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally on these topics.

In addition, Dr. Califano is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and currently serves as a Director on the Board. He joined the OHSU School of Dentistry in 2014 after serving on the dental faculty for over 20 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and East Carolina University.
