Biography

Dr. Katancik received his dental degree in 1984 from Emory University, completed a General Practice Residency in Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at the Harvard Medical Center in 1985, and following six years in general private practice in Cherry Hill, New Jersey Dr. Katancik attended the State University of New York at Buffalo completing a combined Certificate/PhD program in Periodontology and Oral Biology in 1998.

Dr. Katancik became a full-time faculty member at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1998, serving as postgraduate program director from 2003-05. Dr. Katancik joined The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston in November 2005 as Chair of the Department of Periodontics and School of Dental Hygiene. Dr. Katancik relocated to the Oregon Health & Science University in 2012 to assume the position of Chair of the Department of Periodontology. Throughout his academic career Dr. Katancik has maintained an active faculty practice in periodontics and implant dentistry.

Dr. Katancik’s primary research interest is in the area of periodontal medicine, specifically the relationship between periodontal diseases, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Katancik is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, has served as a Board Examiner since 2010, was elected as a Board Director in 2016, is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Research, and a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists.
