In recent years, my energy and passion has turned toward two areas: simulation-based learning and interprofessional education. With my experience in nursing in general, my experience as simulation coordinator on the Klamath Falls SON campus, and my current research role as principle investigator for a HARP grant (2017-18), I feel I am well position to contribute to the undertaking of as co-investigator of “An Interprofessional Practice and Education Model” research grant. This project uses an innovative approach to further undergraduate knowledge and practice regarding oral health and its impact on overall systemic health for potentially vulnerable people with dental caries, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. It also is designed to maximize teamwork and collaboration between two discipline historically educated separately: baccalaureate nursing students and dental hygiene students. This model of interprofessional practice and education will place teams of students in community primary care settings with the potential for impacting overall health in a rural community.
