Biography

Dr. Puligandla immigrated as a child with his family from south India to South Dakota and grew up in several Midwestern states and Texas. After completing his medical education at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH he did a clinical internship at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA and was subsequently deployed as a Battalion Surgeon with the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan.

Dr. Puligandla returned to the Naval Hospital in Oakland for his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Upon completion of his military service as a staff pathologist in Long Beach and Oakland he joined The Permanente Medical Group in Northern California.

The majority of his career was spent at the Kaiser Oakland medical center where he served for 19 years as the Chief of Pathology and 9 years as the Chair of the Chiefs of Pathology group. During this time the pathology department at Oakland earned a reputation for professional excellence and fostering a culture of innovation and pioneering changes in practice.

Dr. Puligandla’s other professional activities include serving 15 years as the Registrar for the South Bay Pathology Society and he continues to serve as a Board member and Chair of the Education Committee of the California Society of Pathologists. Dr. Puligandla also held an appointment as an Associate Professor in the UCB-UCSF Joint Medical Program where he served as a lecturer, examiner and Unit Tutor for medical students.

Dr. Puligandla is an avid reader of both fiction and non fiction titles and strives to be informed about current events. Other interests include fitness activities, cooking, travel and sports. He is looking forward to this new part of his career at OHSU as well as exploring Portland and the Pacific Northwest.
