  • Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, School of Medicine

Biography

"I strongly believe in the importance of seeing the patient as a person, not as a diagnosis or series of symptoms. To this end, I take a collaborative approach to care with my patients and partner with them as we address their health needs."

Anil Sharma, MD, is gastroenterologist who specializes in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dr. Sharma earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. After medical school, he moved to the Pacific Northwest where he completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

His fellowship included dedicated training in IBD and research focused on the use of noninvasive biomarkers of inflammation in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In 2021, he joined the faculty at OHSU. His ambulatory practice is based at the VA Portland Health Care System, but he also provides consultative care on the inpatient service at both the Portland VA Medical Center and OHSU.

He enjoys working with and training the next generation of healthcare providers and is actively involved with the gastroenterology fellowship and internal medicine residency training programs. His educational interests include curriculum development, mentorship, and learner assessment. His research interests focus on quality improvement and patient safety, including work on improving multidisciplinary care coordination and assessing outcome measures in patients with IBD.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Sharma enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is an avid home cook and baker, but also appreciates the incredible restaurant scene here in Portland.
