Research
Congratulations to Dr. Brandon Togioka for his invited commentary in JAMA Surgery. Drs. Togioka and Mayo (Department of Surgery) were invited to comment on a recently published retrospective cohort study utilizing a cancer registry in Ontario, Canada, that found greater surgeon-anesthesiologist familiarity is associated with reduced postoperative major morbidity. The study concludes that increased surgeon-anesthesia familiarity is associated with a decrease in 90-day major morbidity. In their invited commentary, Dr. Togioka and Mayo discuss the unintended consequences of altering systems of care.

- Dr. Barrington, the executive section editor for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, provided a very nice accompanying editorial, Anatomy for the adductor canal block: does location really matter?
Congratulations to Dr. Nabil Alkayed on his newly awarded NIH grant. This is a U01 grant to test an FDA-approved soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitor (GSK2256294) in the Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network. The SPAN network is a consortium of several national laboratories sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for standardized, multi-site preclinical testing of stroke therapeutics. Dr. Alkayed and colleagues have already demonstrated safety of GSK2256294 in critically ill patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). If the drug passes the rigorous preclinical testing by SPAN, it can be advanced for testing in clinical trials of acute ischemic stroke.
Congratulations to Drs. Nabil Alkayed, Catherine Davis, Robert Shangraw and Wenbin Zhu, and Elyse Allen, Sarah Feller, and Thierno Madjou Bah for their article, Sex Difference in Capillary Reperfusion after Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Diabetic Mice, being selected by prestigious American Heart Association journal Stroke to be featured on Stroke’s blog, Blogging Stroke. Blogging Stroke highlights high-impact studies published in Stroke. In addition to article summaries, Blogging Stroke includes interviews with authors of recently published Stroke articles and keeps a pulse on the latest happenings in the stroke field through coverage of conferences, including the European Stroke Organization Conference and the International Stroke Conference. Blog posts are written primarily by a group of stroke fellows and other early career researchers, and thus the blog fosters the involvement of the younger members of the stroke community with the journal and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
Congratulations to Dr. Yoshio Funahashi for being invited to give a podium presentation at the 2023 American Heart Association Vascular Discovery conference this spring. His project titled “Cardiac cysteine and glycine rich protein 3 induces renal myogenesis leading to CKD” focuses on the hypothesis that CSRP3 induces myogenesis in the renal proximal tubule, inducing CKD.
Congratulations to Dr. Hung Ngyuen for being awarded the YIEE (Young Investigator Educational Enhancement) travel award and to give a presentation at American Society for Neurochemistry 2023 in Lexington, KY. The purpose of this award is to support the development of an outstanding, translationally focused postdoctoral investigator by facilitating their attendance and participation in the 53rd annual ASN meeting being held March 18-22, 2023 in Lexington, Kentucky. Hung will present on his work titled "Post-ischemic protection of subcortical white matter following a selective ischemic attack ".
